About Us
Who are we?
Universal Village is a small collection of socially minded people who want to make a positive difference through their work.
What do we do?
We trade with suppliers from developing regions of the world according to Fairtrade standards and then distribute these goods through retailers around Australia.
We try to focus on products that make the biggest difference, which usually means selecting products that are processed and packaged in the country of origin - as this is where most of the value and income is generated.
It's also our mission to inspire Australians to think of others and use their gifts to make a contribution - to grow and prosper.
Why?
It seems really unfair that some people have an overabundance of stuff, whilst others, through no fault of their own struggle just to get the basics they need, with little hope of change. Things are very out of balance !
Fairtrade is a tangible way that we can help rebalance the world of trade. Through Fair Trade, the farmers not only receive a higher price, but the opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge so they can increase the value and bargaining power that they bring to the table when they trade.
Our business....
Our business philosophy is that people should be treated as anend unto themselves, not as a means to an end. Any kind of business that treats people as simply a resource is destroying the most important 'value' of all.
Along with many other peaceful entrepreneurs, Universal Village's goal is to create more life through the exciting meduim of trade; trade that encourages communication, trust, cultural understanding, and creates an end product that increases prosperity and is sustainably sourced.
Some of our values...
Business exists to create employment, and to bring people together to do useful things in society that individuals alone, or governments cannot do (or cannot do very well!).
Everybody deserves to get paid fairly for the work for the work they do so they can afford to sustain themselves.
Everybody should have an opportunity to contribute.
Sensible economic growth and development.
And remember, no matter where you go, there you are. Confucious.
